(Page 12)

"What was advertised and described as the oldest brewery in the city was started by Peter Schwitzgebel in the late 1850s, at the corner of 3rd and Oak. Mr. Schwitzgebel, a native of Germany, and his new wife, whom he had met in St. Louis, moved here in 1855. By 1860 he was doing business using the name Kansas City Brewery and by 1867 advertised not only lager beer, but ale and porter. He also owned and operated a saloon at 1411 Main. He not so modestly claimed to brew the best lager beer west of St. Louis. By 1866 he was consuming 7,500 pounds of hops, 9,000 bushels of malt, and turning out 3,000 barrels per year. That year he expended $15,000 on improvements and new buildings. His brewmaster, name unknown, was described as being from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. By 1869, Schwitzgebel was calling his establishment the Third Street Brewery, putting out 5,000 barrels a year, with sales totaling $65,000. An advertisement boasted boasted of a total capital investment of $60,000 and employing eight persons for monthy wages totaling $400. By 1871 the name had been changed from Third Street Brewery back to the Kansas City Brewery. Peter became very prominent in social and political circles, although he never sought public office. He accumulated considerable wealth, but lost his property in the financial panic which swept the country in 1872. His wife also died that year. He remarried and had three more children, adding to the six from the first marriage, for a total of nine. The city directories for 1875 show a name change to Kansas City Brewing Company and list Clark and Kump as proprietors. Mr. Schwitzgebel died in 1882. One of his sons, H.C. Schwitzgebel, worked for Frank Kump from 1875 to 1878."
